The Fourth Sign of the “Upgrade”

Another change that goes along with starting your period is a gradual change in your pelvic (hip area) bone structure. Your hips may widen early in your teen years or later on. Just as you can’t do you do anything about your bone structure. The genes you inherited when you were conceived from your mother’s egg and your father’s sperm will determine what shape you become.

I’m not saying, by the way, that you are going to get fat. I am saying that you will gradually begin to look more womanly as your bone structure matures. You will look more like a grown-up woman than like a little girl who has no curves. This is just another part of God’s plan for you to become a woman.

Boys

As you change and mature physically you will become more interested in boys and young men who are your age. We will talk about this in depth in another chapter, but for now I want to give you a couple of thoughts about things I have noticed with our girls in their early years of adolescence.

You probably know a number of boys from your school, neighborhood, or church. You may have played together, or maybe your families vacationed together. But as your body begins to change from a girl to a young woman, and as the boys you know begin to change into young men, you will notice each other in a different way. Some of those boys are going to be more interesting to you than others.

At school and even at church you will notice that some girls are flirting with boys. Today many teenagers are overly friendly with each other in a physical way. For example, it has become common for teenage boys and girls to give each other back massages, to hug each other a lot, and for girls to sit on boys’ laps just to be friendly. Often the girl initiates this contact with the boy. The reason boys and girls do this kind of thing is that it feels good and it also feels “special” to be physically close to the opposite sex. This may sound kind of weird to you now, but chances are that someday soon it will feel just the opposite. In fact, getting close to boys may become very exciting.
